Young diver in speedboat scare
Posted on June 26th 2009
A young watersports enthusiast has undergone three operations after he was hit by a speedboat in the Plymouth Sound.
Pete Mills, 24, was scallop diving when the 18ft craft passed over him. Seeing the danger, Mills dived down but was caught by the powerful propeller blades which sliced off a large chunk of his right buttock.
Surgeons at the local Derriford Hospital had to operate three times to stitch up the 8-inch hole that was left in his backside.
Mills can consider himself lucky however; had the propeller struck him a few inches higher it would have come into contact with his spine and vital nerves.
The young diver has warned other people taking to the water this summer to exercise extreme caution in order to prevent similar incidents.
