Yacht hired using Fraudulent Certificate
Posted on February 27th 2008
A Bournemouth woman has been cautioned under the Fraud Act after she used a fraudulent certificate to hire a Yacht near Dorset last summer.
The woman, who has remained unnamed, wished to hire a Yacht, but the conditions of hire requested, in order to hire a vessel you will need to produce a Marine and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Yacht master Certificate. She found a copy of the certificate on the social networking site ‘Facebook’ and downloaded the image and doctored it, then claiming that it was a photocopy of the original, which she didn’t like to carry around.
The Yacht hire firm accepted the certificate and once the lady had paid in full and returned the Yacht undamaged it was then that they found it to be a forgery and was investigated by The MCA and Marine Unit of Dorset Police.
The MCA Enforcement Unit advised that Copies of Seafarers certificates should never be published on the Internet and if some have already done so they should be removed immediately.
