A well known boat builder from Falmouth, who spent most of his life building and racing gigs, has sadly died after suffering ill health.
Mr. Bird, from Falmouth in Cornwall has built over 29 racing gigs for boating clubs across the county, he has also spent time in the past restoring them for those who are keen gig racers. Gig rowing is one of Cornwall's fastest growing spots, and Mr. Bird has helped this happen with his keen enthusiasm which is admired by many.
Maritime enthusiast would have heard of Mr. Bird as when he wasn't building or restoring he would be doing public talks to thousands of people over the years on pleasure boats, at the National Maritime Museum and also at gig clubs. He would talk about his passions and earlier experiences of building the gigs, including one in which he built in 1980, known as the Royal, one of the best gigs around.
