Unmanned boat drifting out to sea
Posted on May 11th 2009
Concern was raised on Wednesday after an unmanned boat was spotted drifting close to Sunderland harbour.
Several calls were made by concerned members of the public to the coastguard after they spotted the boat drifting out to the sea, who then contacted Sunderland RNLI who launched their lifeboat.
The lifeboat was taken to the boat, which was close to the harbour entrance to establish if the vessel was abandoned or whether the crew had been lost overboard.
When the lifeboat arrived at the reported location they found that the boat had disappeared due to the 40mph winds, however they did manage to spot the wooden boat three quarters of a mile away without any signs of a crew ever being on board.
The boat is now in temporary moaning at Sunderland’s South Dock.
