Uncertain future for annual boat race
Posted on December 15th 2008
An annual boat race that attracts an audience of 7.6 million viewers has been dumped from ITV’s schedule in order to support the FA Cup Football.
For many years the historic events between Oxford and Cambridge have been televised. They had prime location on the BBC schedule until it moved to ITV. The annual boat race has an uncertain future as ITV has secured a fantastic football deal, which will allow them to cover the England International Games, Champion League and FA Cup Finals until 2012.
The BBC looks set to win back the rights to the event, which they had broadcasted since 1924. They were angry when the event went to their rivals but are relieved to have the opportunity to have the event back.
