Trawler skipper pleads guilty to being under the influence
Posted on January 28th 2009
A trawler skipper pled guilty this week to being drunk whilst in charge of his boat, when he was breathalysed on the 25th July last year, a mile from where he had set sail.
The skipper, who was from the Isle of Barra, had set sail from Mallaig and was stopped a mile South of Sleat Point on Skye, where he gave an alcohol reading of 98. The legal limit to sail a boat is 35, leading him to plead guilty to taking his boat to sea whilst under the influence of drink, putting him and others at danger.
The two crewmen on board were also accused of being drunk whilst aboard, giving readings of 112 and 92. The case against the crewman will continue after they pled not guilty to the same charges as the skipper.
