Three musketeers stranded in the Ouse
Posted on July 22nd 2009
As the British summer plays true to form the heavens opened over the weekend with torrential rain falling in parts of the UK. However, it was narrow boat sufferers who fell victim to the rapidly rising canal water levels.
3 barges on the River Ouse tied themselves together for added protection, as their mooring rings lay 14 ft underwater. They will have to wait at least a further two days before water levels drop and they are able to untie their craft from the banks of Marygate, York.
Although Moira and Mike Wellburn owners of The Blue Toad have years of valuable canal boat sailing experience behind them, they still have the swelling of the River Ouse to be a rather 'shaky' experience and that were grateful for the company of another 2 couples, whom were sharing the journey.
The canal team organised themselves into a watch rota to keep an eye on the changeable conditions and as in all times of shaky circumstances, their boating camaraderie helped to keep spirits buoyant.
The three boats, 'Dawn', 'Tumzul Cloud' and 'The Blue Toad' continue to float stranded in the middle of the River Ouse just outside of York waiting for weather conditions to improve. However the MET office forecasts predict a mixture of heavy showers with the odd sunshine breaks for throughout the week.
Fingers crossed, we'll have enough dry weather to allow the boats to be untied and continue with their travels!
