Teenager to sail single handed
Posted on October 02nd 2009
A bereaved teenager who lost his father to cancer last year is planning on raising money for charity in his memory by sailing single handed across the English Channel.
The 14 year old, a keen sailing enthusiast from Devon, has never undertaken such a challenge, however his father was the first person to cross the English Channel using a windsurf back in 1983. Oliver would also like to accomplish a great achievement, a challenge his father would be proud of, this will also help him raise £10,000 for cancer research.
Training has already started for the young lad on his safety boat, giving him an insight into the challenges which may occur in his crossing, which is scheduled for May 2010 and estimated to take him around 24 hours. The boat that he will be using, a five metre Silhouette Mk II Hurley, was restored by Oliver and his family to carry out the sail which will take him on a 115 mile journey from Portsmouth to Roscoff; it is currently being moored at Mayflower Marina for free, giving Oliver an opportunity to raise more money for the charity.
Insure My Boat offers boat insurance to keen sailing enthusiasts, for all boating needs.
