Boat Insurance News: Skipper to be sentenced for drinking and sailing
Posted on September 16th 2009
George Wood a scallop fisherman, from Ayr, has had his court case adjourned for sentencing until next month at York Crown Court. He has pleaded guilty to the charges, of which the sentence is the same to that of motorists. The 52-year-old skipper had been celebrating the night before in Scarborough, where he had decided to carry on his binge through the morning of his birthday beaching the vessel near Filey.
Mr Wood has been a man at sea since he was 15 and has been a captain of vessels for 21 years so he is more than aware of the consequences of drinking whilst sailing. The veteran sailor was found by the police to have consumed more than double the legal limit of alcohol. With his breath test showing that he had a 81 microgramme alcohol level which is well over the 35 microgramme legal limit, he can be sure that this birthday will be he remembers after all.
