Single handed race attracts many
Posted on April 15th 2008
Attracting almost 70 entries before the start on 31st May, the single-handed Jester Azores Challenge 2008 (JAC 08) looks to be very popular among mad skippers. The race will be starting out at Plymouth and finishing at Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel.
The race is open to yachts between 20 and 30ft and with the minimum of safety items required, ERIRB, Radio, Life craft etc, competitors are free of restraints. The safety of the boats is going to be left to fellow competitors, and if they feel that an entry is unsafe they will refuse entry.
The JAC 08 is to be a warm up for the 2010 jester Challenge, which will be the 50th Anniversary of the first OSTAR. The Jester Challenge, ‘a poor mans transatlantic’ was first raced in 2006, after it was inspired by the first OSTAR when Blondie Hasler in 1960 raced four others for a half crown bet across the Atlantic. The race was one by Sir Francis Chichester in around 40 days.
