Shipwrecked sailor is left penniless
Posted on July 06th 2009
A 61-year-old Sailor who decided on a round Britain Voyage is now relying on hand outs after his yacht hit rocks and his £6,000 life savings floated away in a watertight container.
The 25ft long wooden-hulled vessel, named Hanser, hit rocks in Thick Fog as the sailor made his way from Lyme Regis to West Bay. The sailor realised he was in trouble as he approached the rocks, so tried his auxiliary engine but the Keel Handle snapped.
The man, who has been sailing for 47 years, had set sail on his £20,000 mahogany boat along with his life savings to pay for his trip. All of which was watched away when he became shipwrecked, all he was left with was the clothes he was standing in.
He is now sleeping in his shipwrecked boat, which was salvaged from the seabed, as well as a bed and breakfast. Locals have been helping him by providing him with clothes and food as well as setting up a salvage fund to help pay for the £6,000 he needs to get the boat repaired.
