Boat Insurance News: Sailing towards a record and a new lease of life
Posted on September 04th 2009
Hilary Lister a 37-year-old who suffers from reflex sympathetic dystrophy sailed into the record books on Monday 31 August after being the first quadriplegic to sail solo around the UK.
Lister, who is only able to move her head, used advanced systems so she was able to control the boat by sucking and blowing down a set of straws. Although she did sail around the UK on her own she did have a trained crew with her the whole way, which was only used to lift her in and out of the vessel.
Lister had become the first quadriplegic in 2005 to sail the channel and has found peace on a new lease of life in sailing. The Oxford educated biochemist was happy to be back on dry land but cannot wait until her next challenge out at sea.
An excited Lister explained, "just seeing whales 35ft long fully breached out of the water was incredible. Two of them jumped like dolphins, it was amazing."
