Sail to the American Dream
Posted on August 03rd 2009
Thousands of migrants desperately try to enter the United States of America either legally or illegally so desperate are their attempts to escape the poverty for their home towns. The US battle at the Mexican border is often reported with many illegal immigrants trying death defying leaps to cross the border, digging under the physical wall or making a chance run into the open country.
However, the slightly less well publicised attempts taken by immigrants from the nearby Caribbean islands, cramming themselves onto boats to make it to the coast of Florida, are also worthy feats to report. It was one of these boats that ran into difficulty off the islands of Turks and Caicos as 200 passengers remained stranded on board the vessel.
The rescue initiative led by the US coast guard in conjunction with the Turks and Caicos authorities reported that over 113 people had survived and were rescued taken to nearby hospitals in the Caribbean islands. However a further 70 people remained missing with at least 2 people having lost their lives in their attempt to reach their American Dream.
The boat mainly carrying Haitians, had sailed through the islands carrying passengers who hoped to find work in Florida or the Bahamas. However at least 100 people lose their lives trying to reach the states illegally mostly attributed to overcrowded vessels which do not carry enough life-saving gear for all their passengers.
The boat that sank on Thursday, 30 July ran into trouble as it steered into a reef trying to avoid a police patrol boat.
