SOS Anniversary celebrated with Stamps
Posted on March 13th 2008
The Royal Mail have produced a set of stamps that will go on sale today to mark the adoption of SOS as the worldwide used Morse code distress signal at sea.
To recognise the hard work carried out by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, (RNLI), the stamps were presented onboard a RNLI Lifeboat, using a large stamp.
The Stamps feature a photograph capturing the harsh weather conditions that the RNLI lifeboat crew encounter when searching and rescuing out at sea, and HM Coastguard Rescue Helicopters rescuing people who are in distress.
Four out of the six sets of stamps that have been produced pictures the same lifeboat that was used 67 times in 2007 and rescued 56 people.
Many people are unaware that the lifeboat crews are all run by volunteers and rely complete upon their charity to keep the lifeboat stations and lifeboats running to save peoples lives out at sea.
The stamps, named Mayday will be raising money towards the charity and they are hoping to raise approximately £20,000.
