Russian ship loses its cargo
Posted on January 21st 2009
A Russian ship travelling through the English Channel lost 1500 tons of sawn timber. The ship was on route to Egypt when it was affected by gale force winds.
The winds blew the cargo off the ship, which was 14 miles off the East Sussex coast. It is believed that the cargo is sheltering near the Isle of Wight. Aerial surveillance is constantly monitoring the load to ensure the load is still in its secure bundles.
The coast guards have sent out a warning to other vessels in the area advising them of the debris in the ocean. They believe the timber will come ashore somewhere between Brighton and Newhaven depending on weather conditions.
This is not the first cargo ship to loose it cargo in the English Channel. Last January, another cargo ship lost 2,000 tonnes of sawn timber from its decks in the English Channel.
