Posted on September 28th 2009
Owners of a brand new rowing boat have narrowly escaped drowning after their boat was demolished by a 124ft catamaran.
The rowing boat had recently been purchased by the seven rowers to use in their London to Paris challenge which will be taking place next May. It was during one of their test runs when disaster struck and the 124ft catamaran hit the vessel side on, snapping it in half leaving the rowers to swim for survival.
Investigations have been launched by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch and the Port of London Authority to discover how and why the accident happened. Witnesses commented that the skipper of the 220 seat Hurricane Clipper Ferry had been informed that the rowing boat was beneath by his look outs however he didn't seem to acknowledge them and carried out going. All seven rowers were thrown from the boat, with one getting caught between the two hulls of the ferry however police were able to pull each and everyone to the safety of their launch.
