River stour says bye bye to thieves
Posted on September 23rd 2009
Police in Sandwich have assured boat owners on the River Stour that they will be carrying out a crackdown on the thieves that lay in wait following a spate of damages and thefts.
The vandals have been causing chaos along the riverside by cutting cables, letting boats run adrift and freeing the buoys, which are used as a vital tool to boaters as they act as navigation along the river stretch. Smaller boats have also been physically stolen from the river and left abandoned elsewhere, leaving the owners in dismay.
Sandwich town council, who are trying to sort out the matter with the local police have been informed that these incidents are being taken very seriously. Police will be gathering information on the vessels along the river, logging which boat belongs to who, including who has boat insurance, if people are living upon them on a regular basis and if the boats have been registered or not.
Certain parts of the river are not accessible by road; however the police will be doing their upmost to keep an eye on the activity along the stretch. Any suspicious activity will be reported straight to the boat owner. Some boat owners themselves will be taking part in the crackdown and have been issued with radios so they can report anything unusual to the police.
