Record attempt on hold for disabled sailor
Posted on June 08th 2009
Hilary Lister, a quadriplegic yachtswoman, who hopes to become the first disabled woman to sail solo around Britain has had to abandon ship after the weather deteriorated and she required hospital treatment in Haverfordwest for a check up.
A RNLI lifeboat received contact from Ms Listers support boat who requested their assistance in towing her boat to shore as winds were against them and she became Hypothermic.
The RNLI attempted to transfer Ms Lister from her boat to the Lifeboat however the conditions at sea made this impossible so the tow continued; she was then transferred to the inshore lifeboat then taken to hospital by ambulance.
Ms Lister, who was wheelchair bound at the age of 15 due to a progressive neurological disorder, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, became the first quadriplegic sailor to sail solo across the English Channel in 2005. She followed on her record-breaking attempts two years later by sail around the Isle of Wight solo.
