Race Ends In Tragedy

A Yacht race ended in disaster when Swansea coastguards responded to a mayday call. Two men were taking part in Weston Bay’s annual long distance “Island Race” The two men were on a 27Ft Sloop.
The tragedy happened when a man was hit by a boom and knocked into the water near Barry, South Wales. The remaining man made the mayday call to the coastguards. With in minutes two lifeboats and a rescue helicopter were on the scene.
The helicopter recovered the injured man who was unconscious in the water. He was taken to the university of Wales hospital where he was declared dead.
