RNLI report busiest ever year

Posted on January 27th 2010

The RNLI have released figures that show 2009 was their busiest ever year dealing with 12,000 incidents across Cornwall, Devon and Dorset. The 35 lifeboat stations the RNLI have posted in these areas reported 1,648 call-outs and rescued a total of 1,687 people. The busiest of all the stations was Poole, which included the launch of volunteer crews 200 times, followed closely by Falmouth with a number of 102 and Exmouth with 95.

Beach lifeguards also reported a higher rate of rescues dealing with 10,253 incidents rescuing 12,357 people. The busiest of all beaches was Weymouth main beach reporting a total of 647 incidents this was followed by Perranporth with 608 and Woolacombe where the total number of incidents reported by the RNLI was 577.

The divisional inspector for the South West, Adrian Carey said: "It's for this reason that the RNLI's volunteer sea safety team work with boat owners to promote simple ideas to help avoid incidents. I would urge people to seek their advice and avoid becoming one of our statistics."

This increase in rescues could be as a result of an increased number of Britains choosing to stay ashore during the recession.
