Plastic mass five times bigger than Britain in the sea

Posted on January 19th 2009

A British millionaire adventurer is to set sail a 60ft boat made entirely from empty mineral water bottles through part of the ocean called the Plastic Sea.

The man will set out from San Francisco in April to try and alert the world to the polluting threat of this massive pacific garbage patch.

The area, which is 5 times the size of Britain, is situated between California and Hawaii and is part of the ocean known as the North Pacific Gyre. This is the location where plastic is deposited into the sea and it lingers just beneath the water in a soupy mass.

The man and his five crewmembers will sail 7,500 miles to Sydney, Australia, however the main aim of the voyage is to sail through the Plastic Sea to draw attention to its dangers.

Due to most plastics being non-biodegradable, nearly every piece of plastic ever created is someone where on the planet. Out of 100 Million Tons of plastic produced every year, 10 of this end up the oceans.
