Plastic bottle boat docks
Posted on August 24th 2010
A yacht made of plastic bottles, a construction method that surely made finding boat insurance difficult, has completed a four month journey across the Pacific.
The 'Plastiki' and its crew of five were captained by David de Rothschild, head of Adventure Ecology but probably better known as the youngest heir to the Rothschild banking fortune. Setting off from San Francisco over four months ago the catamaran-style yacht, with 12,500 plastic bottles used in its construction, arrived in Sydney on July 26th2010.
The intention of the voyage was to raise awareness of the amount of plastic slowly breaking down into the worlds oceans, being ingested by fish which are then eaten by us. The boat went through the Giant Pacific Garbage Patch, an area five times the area of the UK with a layer of mainly plastic waste just below the surface.
The 9,000 mile journey was completed without any major problems. This did not surprise the crew and it will increase their chances of a cheap boat insurance quote for the next trip.
