Plan to ban smoking on vessels
Posted on September 28th 2009
The time will come when it is no longer legal to smoke aboard any commercial cruiser.
The government has launched a consultation where they plan to extend the Health act of 2006, it legislates that smoking is not allowed in public places such as pubs and offices. The plan from the government is to now ban smoking on all commercial boats, unless there is a defined and marked area in which to do so. This extension will affect all boats that are covered under the Merchant Shipping Act, there is however an exception for pleasure craft.
The legislation will enforce that all boats in UK territorial and inland waters will now have to implement smoking areas where passengers and crew can smoke on board, although this will not include vessels that are passing through international navigational routes.
A spokesman for the Department of Transport said, "Although these regulations will apply only when ships are in UK waters, the Government would like to see companies taking a forward approach and implementing this policy on board UK registered ships wherever they are in the world."
