Piracy on the high seas

As you sail your yacht around the coastal inlets of the UK, or trundle your narrow boat regally around the canal network, you are unlikely to be worrying about being attacked by pirates. And you'd probably be right not to worry, at least for now.
But the International Maritime Agency and Lloyds, who probably handle more boat insurance than any other boat insurance company, are concerned about the spread of piracy.
Since the beginning of June six ships have been seized in the Red Sea as Somalia-based pirates extend their operations. Heavier security has pushed the pirates out of their traditional area, the Gulf of Aden
Piracy may not directly affect yacht and dinghy owners in the UK. But the dramatic surge in insurance payouts on piracy over the last year or two means that a boat insurance quote may well show a significant increase on last year.
