Pier damage costing large sum
Posted on September 17th 2008
Two south coast piers have to pay large costs after damage over the last 2 days has been caused by the last remaining seagoing paddle steamer when berthing.
On Sunday evening the steamers were pushed out of line by strong currents and hit Yarmouth pier. This resulted in the vessel having to sail to Cowes to disembark the passengers.
Before the passengers boarded the steamer yesterday, it had to make a Sharpe departure when the mooring rope pulled a 4.5 metre part of the landing stage away. The south side of the pier is now closed for 8 weeks to be repaired but the rest of the pier is open and running as usual.
