P&O delays caused by technological glitch
Posted on July 27th 2009
Major channel delays were caused on Friday by a glitch in the computer system at the port of Dover. Much to the annoyance of both P&O ferries and passengers, the computer error caused serious traffic congestion throughout the port and the back log of cars jammed the loading area.
Consequently sailings ran an hour late and travellers were issued a warning that delays were almost certain and to be prepared for a long waiting time. The problem arose when the call-handling system failed to connect with the check-in desks causing havoc and confusion in the loading lanes.
The computer problem only added to the stress of the summer holidays, as the Friday delays corresponded with the first week of the school holidays with many families waiting to take their annual break on the European continent.
P&O staff were unable to carry out manual check-ins as the shipping employees have to rely on the technical system adding further problems to the delays
Sea France released a scolding report of P&O staff saying that although P&O suffered the delay, Sea France would have been able to continue as normal, had passengers been able to access their own check-in booths.
P&O argued that Sea France’s response ‘was a bit cheeky’, bearing in mind that their own staff were continually on strike and holding up queues in the channel.
