Over sixty little ships make Dunkerque celebrations
Posted on June 07th 2010
The 70th anniversary of the evacuation of Allied forces at the beginning of World War II saw the 'little ships' make a return to Dunkerque over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Sailing from Ramsgate around 65 ships, many of them over 80 years old, hopefully had their boat insurance up-to-date, although there was considerable backup on hand. A Royal Navy frigate and patrol boat were in attendance, as well as an RNLI lifeboat, as insurance against any mishaps.
In 1940 the Admiralty needed shallow draft boats, such as the pleasure boats, yachts and launches that frequented the muddy estuaries of South East England, to evacuate stranded troops. A massive project commandeered and mobilised over 900 civilian and naval craft.
The weekend appeared to go well with no news as yet of any major mishaps, so few of the little ships' owners will need to resort to their boat insurance on their return.
