Nautical Friday raises awareness for seafarers charity
Posted on June 23rd 2010
Nautical Friday, held on June the 11th, saw many employees of the maritime industry don stripes and caps to raise money for Seafarers UK. Held as part of Seafarers Awareness week, those dressing up were asked to donate £2 to the charity.
Seafarers UK is the new name for the King George's Fund for Sailors. The charity is an umbrella for many smaller charities, all supporting seafarers and their families. Boat insurance sometimes doesn't provide enough to bring up a family without a breadwinner.
Employees at companies in the naval and shipping industries held quizzes, raffles, treasure hunts and coffee mornings in support of Nautical Friday. Many boat owners won't feel that they face the same dangers as people in the Merchant Navy, Royal Navy or a fishing fleet, the people that the charity supports.
But it is a timely reminder that boat insurance may not be enough to allow normal life to continue should disaster strike. Boat owners are urged to make sure their boat insurance quote (and other insurances) covers all eventualities.
