Mobile phones are not enough when out at sea
Posted on September 24th 2008
When out at sea a mobile phone is not enough, when communication equipment comes in to consideration. Pembrokeshire coastguards are warning that a basic safety kit including communication devices and flares are a must in case of any incident.
Within the last few weeks a number of small vessels were rescued, which has no basic safety equipment on board.
The coastguard has emphasised that having some means of safety equipment is essential. The said that even mobile phones are better then nothing, however sometimes can be temperamental as you are out at sea with cliffs and headlands blocking signals. The coast guard continued, “but beware –once a mobile phone gets wet it is useless and communications can become very erratic”.
Even when taking a small boat out on a short distance from the shore it is vital that you have at least a basic safety kit in case of any incidents. VHF radios with channels specifically for maritime use are recommended with flares.
