Military opposes marina construction
Posted on June 19th 2009
The Ministry of Defence is opposing the construction of a new marina as it claims the plan interferes with a nearby army barracks and its live firing range.
Highland Council have already given planning permission for the marina which is due to be built on the Whiteness site on the Moray Firth coast in Scotland.
Mary Scanlon, Conservative MSP for the area, said the MoD’s response was “understandable”. The Fort George barracks are already forced to close for 20 days of the year because of vessels passing through the live firing area.
Defence minister Kevin Jones said that the MoD was considering using new Military Lands by-laws to block construction of the marina.
