Migrant workers abused on British waters
Posted on December 23rd 2008
Scotland’s fishing industry has been accused of bringing migrant workers in to man boats that are suffering for staff shortages. They have been accused of exploiting their migrant staff.
International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) has released a report highlighting crimes against migrant workers, including exportation, poor pay, abuse and the use of violence.
It is believed that many of these migrant workers are only earning £1.29 per hour giving them a low income of £268 a month. It is believed that Filipino’s are been brought into the country using temporary transport visas. Many of the migrants are brought in to work on different types of vessels that sail through Ireland, Northern Ireland and many parts of England.
They are trying to put a stop to fishing vessels been used to exploit migrants. The ITF would like to see British waters safe, keeping abuse to the minimum on the open sees and fishing vessels filled with British fisherman.
