Megayacht Ecological Contradiction
Posted on August 24th 2010
Once more we feature a yacht so expensive that a cheap yacht insurance quote will be the last thing on the owner's mind. But this time the lucky oligarch who becomes the owner can at least claim ecological credentials.
The apparent world first of a carbon neutral megayacht is being claimed by Sauter Carbon Offset Design. 'Super Nova', their twin-hulled multi-deck yacht design , would use solar panel arrays on two vertical wing sails. This would effect a 75-100% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions at 16 knots and carbon neutral cruising at 8 knots.
Pessimists might think this is just another pretty design that will quietly disappear without ever being built, like so many other 'revolutionary' designs. That would actually be the most ecological course of action, not building it at all. And it removes the inconvenience of actually looking for yacht insurance too.
