Maritime coastguard staff staged first one-day walkout
Posted on March 07th 2008
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) staff have staged the first strike in their history that saw five of the 19 maritime rescue coordination centres closed in a dispute over pay.
The walkout, started at 7am on the 6th March, involved upwards of 700 members from the Public and commercial services (PCS) union. They felt forced into action by the below inflation rate rises in pay that leaves them further behind the other emergency services.
Emergency responses would not have been affected by the strike as the MCA put contingency plans into place to deal with the loss of staff.
Although the PCS members did not take the decision lightly, bosses said that they were bound by public sector pay constraints.
