Man drowns after falling through gap
Posted on June 10th 2009
Hernandez Murillo was tragically found under the Westminster pier after he had fallen through a gap between the boat named the Hurlingham and the pier. The incident occurred on August 17th 2008 as the Hurlingham drifted from Westminster pier. The skipper of the boat had left the wheelhouse to help tidy the boat after an onboard party. The skippers' friend who had been supervising the passengers as they disembarked then left to manoeuvre the boat. The report printed by The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) stated that: "No gangway was used and passengers were allowed to continue disembarking unsupervised while the boat was put back into position".
The unsupervised gap was where Mr Hernandez stepped forward and fell through. His body was found five days later where a post-mortem examination verified he had drowned.
