MCA plan to axe River Tamar rescue boat
Posted on March 12th 2010
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency have come under criticism recently for their plans to scrap a rescue boat from the River Tamar in Cornwall. Around 60 people attended the meeting in Plymouth on Monday night with critics claiming the decision would put lives at risk.
The MCA have announced their decision in the hope that the area could be covered by using other methods, such as the RNLI. No decision has been made but the MCA will carry out a 12-week period of consultation where they will asses the situation and decide the future of their boats on the Tamar.
The boats where originally added to the River Tamar in the 1980's as an extra safety measure, although the RNLI crews from Plymouth and Salcombe could sufficiently cover these areas.
