Little Ships Adventure Ends Safely
Posted on June 07th 2010
Last week we featured the 70th Anniversary of the Dunkerque rescue mission when over sixty small boats, some over eighty years old, retraced their steps. We can now report that all the boats retuned safely and to date no owners have had to make any major claims on their boat or yacht insurance.
One of the more notable successes was 'Anne', who made her way down from shipyards in Berwickshire to try and make the crossing for the third time. Previously engine trouble had caused her crossings to be abandoned but this time all went well, although it was a close call.
This time the engine was fine but there was a near catastrophe that would definitely have had the owners reaching for their boat insurance paperwork. If it wasn't for the quick thinking of one of the crew, who jumped off to fend off, the little ship would have hit Ramsgate harbour's pier wall.
The only other mishap reported so far was the 'South Sea Queen', who suffered a cracked sump on her outward journey. Running repairs were enough to see her complete the journey and take her place at Dunkerque.
All in all a successful event which marked a special anniversary in a very appropriate way.
