Lifejacket to the rescue
Posted on August 25th 2009
After an afternoon fishing trip ended abruptly when his fishing boat overturned, rescue boats found the missing fisherman in the marshes in North Norfolk on Sunday 23 August.
His boat insurance providers will certainly be receiving a claim against his motorboat insurance for the loss of his craft, which even until the end provided a lifesaving platform to ride out the tide.
The fisherman was found by his car looking slightly worse for wear after seeking shelter on the Norfolk marshes overnight. The man still wearing his life jacket describe how his boat had overturned as he had attempted to fix the engine with little result. He then scrambled to the top of the upturned hull and waited for the tide to bring the boat closer to the coast before he then swam to the shore.
However as a member of the Sheringham coastguard explained the fishermen would have still have had a long distance to swim and in the dark. The fishermen had no way of alerting authorities of his predicament and he would have been unable to establish his exact whereabouts.
His wife had reported his disappearance to the coastguard after when he still had not returned since his call home from Weyborne 5 hours beforehand. It is highly likely that his lifejacket saved his life.
Insure My Boat provides motorboat insurance for fishermen and sailors across UK inland and coastal waters allowing added layers of protection in the event of an emergency.
