Lifeboats SOS call to return to duty
Posted on January 14th 2009
Over the summer of 2008 Hope Cove’s Lifeboat was on restricted duty to only a certain distance from the beach as the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) deemed the vessel unsafe but against their orders the lifeboat went out to save a young girl in the sea.
Since then a petition of 5,000 signatures has been collected and is being taken to parliament today to get the vessel reinstated.
At the present moment the lifeboat has been taken away by the MCA and the lifeboat crew fear that this area of south Devon does not have adequate sea rescue coverage. The local MP has backed the petition to get the lifeboat back but the MCA have said that the nearby Salcombe Lifeboat covered Hope Cove.
