Jaws attacks surf boat sweeper
Posted on December 16th 2009
When Greg Ross set out on the morning of Monday 14 December he was not expecting the sequence of events that lay ahead. Whilst rowing across the waves 400 metres off shore from Hawks Nest, Newscastle in Australia, Ross got the fright of his life.
Ross' surf boat sweeper glided seamlessly across the waves, each oar stroking the water. In a scene reminiscent of Spielberg's Jaws, a white pointer shark rose from the depths thinking that Ross' oar was a baby seal skimming the surface, it open its wide teeth-brimming mouth and ripped the oar from Ross' hands.
Ross said that it all happened incredibly quickly and the force which the shark exerted on the oar would have torn his arm from its socket had he not released the paddle. Turning around, Ross explained how he saw the juvenile shark grip the oar in its mouth as it chomped away at the paddle, realizing it was inedible it released the wood to drift on the water.
Ross said he retrieved the oar from the water to see the teeth marks in the paddle and the great white had even left some of its teeth as a souvenir. Ross consider himself a lucky man, as the great sharks have been known to tackle human beings believing them to be part of the normal food chain!
