Inquiry into missing Morecambe coastguard boat
Posted on February 09th 2009
The protracted removal of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) boat from Arnside estuary has prompted an inquiry by the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Department of Transport.
The boat was removed by the MCA seven months ago for repairs with no time frame put in place for its return.
The local MP for the area, Westmorland and Lonsdale, had delivered a petition of thousands of local residents that calls for the boat to be returned to the area due to fears over the suitability of the stand in vessel being used.
The vessel, a hovercraft based in Morecambe, is feared not to be able to get to emergencies, like the deaths of 21 Chinese cockle pickers in 2004, in time to save lives.
