Groupama comes to an abrupt end
Posted on February 19th 2008
The 105ft Maxi Trimarian capsized on 17th February at 2343 GMT, bringing Groupama 3’s round the world attempt to a premature ending. It happened on the South East of New Zealand, where there were 7 metre waves and 30 knots of wind. The windward float broke in two causing the two beams to snap.
Fortunately all of the crew were unharmed and waiting underneath the vessel to be rescued by helicopter. They were flown to Dundin where they were checked over by paramedics before being allowed to go home.
