Groupama 3 chases the Jules Verne Trophy
Posted on February 04th 2008
The 103 feet plus trimaran crossed into the southern hemisphere on Wednesday afternoon in its record-breaking attempt. Franck Cammas’ crew have built a lead of over 600 miles over the current record by Bruno Peyron and his crew in Orange 2 of 50 days, 16 hours, 20 minutes and 4 seconds, set in 2005.
Groupama 3 is one of the new generation of super-sized G-class multihulls that have made for huge leaps in sailing performance over the past few years, that has seen the crewed record and the solo round the world record broken by some distance.
The boat is in the process of positioning itself for strong winds for its passage into the southern ocean going past the Cape of Good Hope. The crew expects 2 to 3 days of good weather to keep the pace up and maintain their lead over Orange 2.
