Gropama 3 maintains a day lead
Posted on February 11th 2008
Franck Cammas and his crew are maintaining the day lead over the comparative time of Orange 2 after 18 days of sailing. As the giant trimaran skirts the Indian and Southern oceans they will be looking to rebuild the sort of lead that they enjoyed in the south Atlantic.
With speeds averaging almost thirty knots and with favorable seas that are now aft instead of abeam has meant that Groupama 3 has been able to put up less sail but still get more speed. This has allowed them to cross four degrees of latitude in half a day.
So far the lead has crept back up to 520 miles and they will be looking to build on this in the future, possibly back to the 700-mile mark that they had before, to take in to the race back up the Atlantic.
