Fire Onboard
Posted on January 06th 2010
A group of fishermen have been rescued after a fire broke out on their boat, 30 miles south of the Isles of Scilly.
The crew issued a mayday alert at around 5pm on New Years Eve, where Falmouth Coastguard organised a rescue mission. The Newlyn registered trawler, Trevessa was carrying four crew at the time of the fire, all suffered from smoke inhalation. A RNAS helicopter was called to the scene to aid the rescue and carried all four men to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.
In total two fishing boats, a lifeboat and the RNAS helicopter were involved in the rescue mission. With all of this help at hand the rescue mission was a success, saving all four men, which are believed to have sustained no major injuries.
The trawler, Trevessa will be towed back to Newlyn bay later this week, where the fishermen will hope to make repairs or claim on their boat insurance.
