Eco boat will sail the sea
Posted on November 18th 2009
Climate campaigners will attempt to cross the ocean using a boat made out of plastic bottles, altogether there are around 12,500 in all. David de Rothschild plans to sail from San Francisco to Sydney and on his way will stop at the Eastern Garbage Patch located in the Pacific ocean. The aptly named location has been given its name due to the build up of rubbish over time as a result of tidal currents, which has formed an area twice the size of Texas. The United Nations has already voiced concerns over this quoting that the area is growing at a very fast rate.
The trips planning has taken de Rothschild's team three years to plan the 10,000 mile trip the completion date is said to be in a few weeks.
The system and build of the boat is completely eco-friendly, the frame of the boat is made from recycled plastic, which will be lined with the 12,500 plastic bottles filled with Co2. The vessel has a composting toilet, solar panels, a hydroponic garden and a set of exercise bikes, which will be used to power the communications relay. Once the journey has been completed the vessel will be broken down and recycled.
