The wreckage was dragged to the shore and the fire service team and South East Coast Ambulance Service worked to free the trapped racer. The patient was due to be airlifted to a nearby hospital however was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining horrific head injuries.
The race was watched by hundreds of spectators who also witnessed the terrible collision. Rescue teams reported that they had to shield the face of the injured party as many people in the audience watching from the coast believed the crash was some form of stunt until debris from the crash rained over their heads.
The organisers of the annual Dover Regatta in Kent cancelled the further scheduled powerboat races to allow a full enquiry and both boats have been removed to aid the investigation. However other events in the Regatta have been re-schedule and will be running as planned.
