Do believe your eyes it is an orange submarine
Posted on May 08th 2008
Boaters in the Solent may very well catch sight of an orange submarine being towed into Portsmouth Naval base.
The submarine is the NR1 and it is the US navy’s smallest research submarine measuring just 44 metres long with a crew of twelve including two scientists.
It is also the first deep submergence vessel that uses a nuclear power plant and can dive to depths of over 700 metres (2200 feet). Most standard submarines have an operating depth of 250-350 metres (800-1100 feet).
The submarine is visiting Portsmouth with her support ship Carolyn Chouest. This follows a recent underwater survey of Norwegian Fjords where it discovered 26 shipwrecks during a 12 hour period.
