Damaged Dunbar Lifeboat may be replaced
Posted on April 02nd 2008
The Dunbar, Trent class, all weather lifeboat that was damaged in the early hours of Saturday 23 March may be beyond repair.
The damage was sustained when the sea bed mooring, that the lifeboat was tied to, broke in rough conditions and the boat was dashed against rocks.
The lifeboat, Sir Ronald Pechell Bt, will be moved to a dockyard in Hartlepool so that a thorough inspection and evaluation to the extent of the damage can be ascertained.
An examination of the sea mooring failure will also begin in order to understand why it happened and to prevent future occurrences.
The boat will be assessed as to the economic feasibility of making the repairs. It was valued at just over £200,000 this year from its original £1.05m build cost in 1995.
The class has been designed with a service life of 25 years, although with constant maintenance, periodic refitting and repairs may see this extended.
In its 13 years of service at Dunbar it has been launched 206 times and has rescued 171 people.
RNLI lifeboats from surrounding stations of Eyemouth, St Abbs, North Berwick and Anstruther will be providing search and rescue cover for the immediate future.
