Branson abandons Atlantic Crossing
Posted on October 27th 2008
Richard Branson announced on Friday, 24th October, that sadly he has had to abort his attempt at crossing the Atlantic.
The founder of The Virgin Group, who was attempting to break the World Record in crossing the Atlantic in a mono-hull Sailing Yacht, had to abandon ship after it was damaged from a bad storm.
40 feet waves and gale force winds were tackled by the boat, one of which took the boat from behind taking one of the life rafts. The furious winds ripped through the mainsail and blew out the spinnaker.
Thankfully no crew were harmed in the storm. Branson has said that they will now concentrate on repairing the boat, hoping to maybe get it back out to sea within the next couple of weeks, failing that the sail will be reattempt in the Spring.
