Boat motors are the targets for Gang thefts
Posted on May 21st 2009
Organised gangs in Essex are targeting the coast in order to steal outboard motors from moored boats. The thieves are targeting the larger engines from 40hp upwards which can cost between £8,000 to £15,000 each. The motors are then sold on the black market where there is huge supply and demand for the engines.
Police have launched a theft deterrent system to try and slow or diminish the thefts, but with the figures from recent years showing that more than £166,000 worth of motors where stolen in Essex alone and around £70million worth stolen in European countries.
